 Skill 16

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to safely haul, secure, and fix aerial cabling in telecommunications networks. It includes working at heights, installing aerial cable supports, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations.

This unit is applicable to telecommunications technicians involved in aerial cable installation across residential, commercial, and infrastructure environments.

Students will learn to:

  • Interpret work instructions, plans, and aerial cabling specifications
  • Identify hazards and implement appropriate risk control measures
  • Select and use appropriate tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Safely access work sites, including working at heights
  • Install aerial support structures (e.g. poles, brackets, catenary wires)
  • Haul aerial cables using approved methods and techniques
  • Secure and fix cables in accordance with manufacturer and industry requirements
  • Test and inspect installation for compliance and functionality
  • Complete documentation and report installation outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will receive a statement of attainment.
