Course Overview

This qualification is intended for individuals working as security technicians who sell, install, repair, service, and maintain security equipment and systems designed to protect people and property and to prevent or minimise loss and damage.

This qualification includes:

The qualification reflects the role of technicians who perform routine and specialised security system tasks under general supervision. At this level, individuals interact directly with clients and undertake installation, servicing, maintenance, and fault-finding activities at client premises in accordance with workplace procedures, regulatory requirements, and industry standards.

On successful completion of this qualification, graduates will have the skills and knowledge to:

  • Install and commission security systems and equipment
  • Service, maintain, and repair security installations
  • Diagnose and rectify faults in security systems
  • Apply safe work practices and comply with relevant legislation and codes
  • Communicate effectively with clients regarding system operation and maintenance

Graduates typically work under general supervision and may be required to adapt established procedures to meet site-specific requirements.

Licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to advising on, supplying, installing, maintaining, monitoring, repairing and servicing security equipment in some states and territories. For further information, check with the relevant regulatory authority.

All cabling work, including telephone, data, fire and security alarm systems cabling, that connects with the telecommunications network must be performed by a registered cabler or under the direct supervision of a registered cabler as required by the Australian Communications Media Authority (ACMA) cabling provider rules. For further information on cabling registration requirements, check with ACMA.

Completion of some units of competency listed within this qualification may result in a vocational outcome that requires open cabling registration under the ACMA cabling provider rules registration system.  For further information on cabling registration requirements, check with ACMA.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this qualification at the time of publication.

On successful completion of all required units a student will be issued with a qualification certificate and transcript of units.

If a student does not complete all units, they will be issued with a statement of attainment for the units completed.

ICTWHS204 Follow Work Health and Safety and ICTTEN208 Use electrical skills when working with telecommunications networks are pre-requisite units of competency for both, ICTCBL246 Install, maintain and modify customer premises communications cabling: ACMA Restricted Rule and ICTCBL247 Install, maintain and modify customer premises communications cabling: ACMA Open Rule
