Telecommunications Technician – HFC (meets NBN requirements)

Telecommunications Technician – HFC Course | Telecommunications Technician – HFC Training : Milcom

Telecommunications Technician – HFC: Works predominantly from the tap up to the optical node (aerial and underground) within the HFC/Outside Plant network, but can also work tap down. Interprets and understands technical design drawings and specifications. Prepares, terminates and connects local distribution (hardline) cabling and lead-in. Organises and monitors cabling to ensure compliance with standards. Performs cut overs to new systems and equipment. Performs radio frequency measurements, including commissioning, testing, locating and rectifying complex faults.
This role is a MIMA specific construction role.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Configure/sweep/balance/align network amplifiers
  • Conduct RF signal quality tests anywhere from optical node to tap Demonstrate use of required equipment
  • Understand QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation) performance
  • Maintain coaxial cable segregation to industry standard requirements
  • Terminate network hardline cabling, including
  • Strip sheath
  • Clean off flooding compound
  • Core the cable
  • Trim centre conductor
  • Fit to pin connector
  • Seal the cable using heat shrink processes
  • Trim pin connector to appropriate length – depending on device connecting to (active / passive)
  • Ensure hazards and any identified risks are captured/documented and have the appropriate controls in place prior to any activities being undertaken
  • Determine cable route and type of cable from construction plan identifying and avoiding other services
  • Obtain plant, tools, safety equipment and material to perform tasks safely and efficiently
  • Install catenary wire or gantry wire or integral bearer cable and tension to required specifications
  • Install and permanently secure cable using aerial fixing devices
  • Identify and label the cables appropriately
  • Terminate and seal / joint cables according to manufacturer's specifications
  • Loop and secure cable on support structure with bending radius tolerance for cable materials, according to manufacturer's specifications, to reduce damage to conductors
  • Test cable for continuity and rectify fault if required, record test results for future reference
  • Complete reports on installation and design amendments
