Telecommunications Lineworker-HFC

Telecommunications Lineworker-HFC Course | Telecommunications Lineworker-HFC Training : Milcom

This skill set addresses the skills and knowledge required for TAP down installation of hybrid fibre coaxial (HFC) cable. Each unit of competency includes relevant work, health and safety awareness training. Other health, safety and environment requirements, relevant to the role specified in this skill set, may be stipulated as part of workplace requirements.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Conduct simple digital RF tests from tap to wall plate
  • Measure level of signal strength and quality, showing MER, BER and constellations
  • Demonstrate use of required equipment
  • Understand minimum RF signal quality requirements in end user premises from tap to wall plate
  • Measure RF leakage
  • Show basic understanding of results e.g. identify network fault
  • Maintain coaxial cable segregation to industry standard requirements
  • Terminate RG6 and RG11 coaxial cable
  • For underground cables: Seal the cable using abrading/foiling/flame brushing of heat shrink
  • Ensure hazards and any identified risks are captured/documented and have the appropriate controls in place prior to any activities being undertaken
  • Determine cable route and type of cable from construction plan identifying and avoiding other services
  • Obtain plant, tools, safety equipment and material to perform tasks safely and efficiently
  • Install catenary wire or gantry wire or integral bearer cable and tension to required specifications
  • Install and permanently secure cable using aerial fixing devices
  • Identify and label the cables appropriately
  • Terminate and seal / joint cables according to manufacturer's specifications
  • Loop and secure cable on support structure with bending radius tolerance for cable materials, according to manufacturer's specifications, to reduce damage to conductors
  • Test cable for continuity and rectify fault if required, record test results for future reference
  • Complete reports on installation and design amendments
