Use Electrical Skills in Telecommunications Work

This course is designed for participants to achieve the required skills and knowledge to undertake basic testing, fault-finding, circuit building and evaluation of cable and wireless devices for application in domestic, commercial and industrial settings. Learners will develop skills to interpret technical data and documentation such as telecommunications network specifications, perform mathematical problem solving skills, apply risk management and safety procedures according to industry standards. It is recommended that participants already hold the Open Registration Licence or have completed the Open Registration course before attending this course.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • determine AC and DC electrical quantities, encompassing SI units, WHS issues and the application of Ohm’s law
  • apply AC and DC fault-finding techniques and use testing equipment
  • describe principles of AC and DC theory
  • outline analog and digital principles
  • apply binary to decimal conversion and vice versa
  • distinguish between analog and digital signals and devices
  • list encoding techniques and their application in wired, wireless and optical communications systems
  • describe features and applications of unshielded twisted pair (UTP), coaxial and fibre cables
  • name typical electronic devices, cable types and their applications
  • apply modulation techniques used in wired, wireless and optical communications systems
  • apply techniques to convert analog to digital and digital to analog

Learning Methods

This course will be delivered in four full day face-to-face training sessions in one of the MILCOM training centres or at a mutually convenient and suitable location, for a sufficiently large group of participants.
