This course is for the learners who want to be part of the Internet of Things (IoT), which will enable the connection of anything, anytime, anyone, any place, any service and any network. This course will prepare the learner for the IoT by providing the underpinning knowledge of the following skills:

  • How to prepare the built environment to be part of the connected world by applying the Smart Wiring codes and beyond
  • Internet protocol which fosters communications
  • Plan, prepare and implement the edge of the IoT network, building and home automation and gain the KNX accreditation

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  • install and maintain enterprise networks in emerging and converging technologies
  • install and maintain optical and wireless equipment for high speed broadband network infrastructure
  • install and maintain internet protocol (IP) based network telecommunications equipment
  • install IP based networks in home networks and small and medium enterprises
  • install and maintain telecommunications, data cabling and cabling products on customer premises in accordance to requirements of the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) and relevant industry registration bodies, and in line with the specifications of the access network owner
  • install and maintain telecommunications access network cabling and infrastructure, systems and basic customer premises equipment
  • assess installation requirements of converging voice, video and data IP networks
  • plan and perform installations
  • test installed equipment and fault find

Additional information:

Whilst there are no pre-requisites under the approved training package for this course, it is strongly recommended that anyone applying for the course has completed the below listed or equivalent:
  • ICTCBL236 Install, maintain and modify customer premises communications cabling: ACMA Restricted Rule (where ACMA Restricted Registration is necessary)
  • ICTCBL237 Install, maintain and modify customer premises communications cabling: ACMA Open Rule
  • ICTCBL301 Install, terminate and certify structured cabling installation
  • ICTCBL303 Install and terminate coaxial cable
  • OR be a licenced electrician

Entry Requirements

There is no entry requirements for this qualification. Students are required to perform an entry assessment which includes colour deficiency, language, writing and literacy elements. Please speak with your enrolment adviser to discuss your suitability.

Duration & Delivery

This qualification is delivered as blended learning with face-to-face sessions held at the MILCOM training centre over 12 months (not including holiday breaks). You will be required to attend a Milcom Institute’s training rooms for a total of 23 days. The attendance is in the following blocks:
Block 1 - Smart Wired4 days
Block 2 - IP3 days
Block 3 - KNX5 days
Block 4 - Assessment preparation and assessment2 days
Block 5 – BICSI Telecommunications Project Management5 days
Block 6 – Assessment preparation and assessment4 days
