Installation and Maintenance (Basic)(Meets Telstra Standards)

This course is designed for participants to achieve the required skills and knowledge to carry out cable fault repair (using electronic fault location instruments) and telephone service installation in the Telstra network. It includes joint metallic conductor cable in Telstra underground pits and jointing or above-ground enclosures‚ installation of cross connections (jumper wire) in Telstra exchanges, pillars and cabinets, and work on the Telstra side of customer main distribution frames.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • cross connect the allocated LI/main/branch/distribution pair at the local exchange, cabinet, pillar or cross connect joint
  • test, identify and connect the allocated pair provided no greater than three PVC or HSJ Joints were involved (not in line joints)
  • install Tyco 2/5 pair joints as required and test, using Fast
  • conduct repair work, limited to the replacement of faulty connectors using 'make before break' connectors on distribution cable joint
  • install ALIC from the network connection point to the wall box at the building entry point (or the ALIC box if replacing a faulty lead in)
  • install underground lead in cable from the network connection point to the wall box at the building entry point (existing conduit only)
  • provide cable from the wall box at the building entry point to the carriers network boundary
  • provide and connect customer equipment and install standard customer's lightning protection in urban areas when stipulated. (Telstra/ACMA Guidelines apply)
  • install customer cabling and equipment depending on the type of cabling registration and the endorsements associated with the registration

Learning Methods

This course will be delivered in ten full day face-to-face training sessions in one of the MILCOM training centres or at a mutually convenient and suitable location‚ for a sufficiently large group of participants.
